THE MERCHANT OF VENICE- NERISSA SPILLS THE TEA

School Performances

This production is all about students being able to access the text, themes, and plot of The Merchant of Venice, in a fun way!

Our narrator, Nerissa spills the tea- she takes students on a journey they can understand and enjoy in this refreshing take on The Merchant of Venice.

It is an incursion into the text with audience interaction- some famous speeches are there, major characters are there, and the information is broken down, so the students are engaged. The audience is asked to participate in several breakout activities, including quizzes and games involving Shakespearian language, discussions of prejudice and modern music is used throughout. At the conclusion of the performance there will be a Question-and-Answer time available with cast and production members present.

Under our skilled ensemble your students will be interested, challenged, and entertained. It will be a 90 min performance with no interval.

Here is an example of Nerissa’s opening speech:

NARRATOR NERISSA

Hey there, I’m Nerissa and this is “The Merchant of Venice” by some bloke you may have heard of, William Shakespeare. I think he wrote a few plays, but the one I’m in, definitely the best. In your face Juliet!

All schools attending will receive a digital resource pack for teachers upon booking. This includes:

  • a suggested pre-show preparation for students
  •  information about the play
  • a worksheet for students
  • a useful resource list.

The text may relate to HSC Common Module
